The Dos and Don’ts of Flirting

Are there rules to flirting? While it might seem like an easy activity, there are right and wrong ways to flirt. As the founder of an elite dating club New York Socials, I’ve helped countless men master the art of flirting. Here are the most important dos and don’ts of flirting.

Do learn the basic language of flirting. Playful eye contact is one of the most universal gestures of flirting. If you want someone to know you’re interested without seeming desperate, you will have to make eye contact. Women will usually make eye contact and then look away. If they are interested, though, they will look again. Even if it’s subtle. If you’re interested in her, grab the opportunity to lock eyes the second time. If she gives you a big smile, you can feel comfortable enough to approach her and start up a conversation.

Don’t go overboard. Flirting is all about being tactful, playful, and subtle. As a matchmaker in New York, I’ve seen it happen way too many times. A guy hits on a woman too aggressively and turns her off. Or, a woman won’t stop smiling and laughing at someone they have just met. It’s important to keep flirting appropriate by realizing you don’t need too much to make it known you’re attracted to someone.
