This couldn’t be further from the truth: if you take some basic steps to care for your vintage diamond engagement ring, it can retain its brilliance and luster for the rest of your life. Here are a few ways that you can ensure the condition of your antique rings:

Watch for Loose Stones: One of the most common issues with vintage rings is that the prongs become worn down over time, causing the stone to become loose. If you aren’t careful, you could look at your ring one day and notice a hole where the diamond should be. Give your stone a slight wiggle from time to time to make sure that it fits snuggly in the prongs; go to your local jeweller if you notice that it’s even a little loose.

Be Careful with Ultrasonic Cleaners: Using ultrasonic jewellery cleaners is great for new rings but can cause damage to the enamel of a vintage ring or can loosen the stone. It’s better to clean the rings by hand and do it twice rather than try to do it quickly with an ultrasonic cleaner and cause damage to your ring.

Stay Away From Chemicals: Many store-bought jewellery cleaners have harsh chemicals that can damage your vintage engagement ring. Unless you are dealing with serious issues, you can perform basic cleaning by using soapy water and a soft toothbrush.
